Equalizer

Let me tell you about the night that changed everything for me. It was back when I was just a young troll, barely out of my teens, scramblin' to survive in the Barrens like everyone else.

I'd managed to score a job as a dishwasher in this fancy corp restaurant. You know the type - all chrome and glass, where the bigwigs go to flash their cred. I was just happy to have steady work and access to food scraps.

One night, everything went sideways. The head chef, this uptight elf with more attitude than talent, collapsed right in the middle of service. Heart attack or bad stim, never found out which. But suddenly, the kitchen was in chaos.

I don't know what came over me, but I stepped up. Started barkin' orders, taking charge. Maybe it was desperation, maybe it was destiny. All I know is, I found myself at the stove, cookin' up a storm.

I made the kind of food I knew - street food, Barrens cuisine. Simple, hearty stuff that'd keep a troll going through a tough night. But I gave it a twist, made it look fancy enough for the corp crowd.

The waiter gave me a look like I'd lost my mind when I sent out the first plate. But what choice did we have?

I'll never forget what happened next. This high-roller corp exec, all decked out in the latest fashion and more chrome than flesh, took a bite. And you know what he did? He smiled. Actually fraggin' smiled.

Word spread through the dining room. Soon, everyone was orderin' what the exec was havin'. Corps, mid-level managers, even a few off-duty KE officers. They were all chowing down on my Barrens-inspired grub like it was going out of style.

After the rush died down, the owner called me into his office. I figured I was about to get fired, maybe even arrested for impersonatin' a chef or something. Instead, he offered me a job. Said he'd never seen the dining room so united, so...happy.

But here's the thing that really got me, omae. As I was leavin' that night, I saw something I'll never forget. The corp exec who'd first tasted my food was sharin' a table with one of the bussers. They were laughin', swappin' stories, bonding over how much they'd enjoyed the meal.

That's when it hit me. For a few hours, my food had erased the lines between corp and street. It didn't matter how much cred you had or what your SIN said. Everyone was just...people, enjoying a good meal together.

From that night on, I knew what I had to do. I was gonna cook, yeah, but more than that, I was gonna use food to bring people together. To remind everyone, even if just for a meal, that we're all the same when we're filling our bellies.

'Cause in this fractured world of ours, anything that can bridge those gaps, even for a moment? That's more powerful than any spell or cyber. And if I could do that with a well-cooked meal? Well, that was a kind of magic I could believe in.

So yeah, chummer, that's why I believe food's the great equalizer. 'Cause I've seen it with my own eyes. And every time I fire up my grill, I'm hoping to make that magic happen all over again.
